Although entry lists for the TOCA support categories are far from confirmed with two months still remaining before the start of the 2012 season, in the Ginetta Junior Championship a major title battle is expected with race winners Charlie Robertson and George Gamble both returning.
While Robertson, the Vice-Champion in Ginetta Junior last year, has confirmed he will once again drive for HHC Motorsport, fellow 15-year-old Gamble will compete for reigning champion team Hillspeed – the squad which ran Seb Morris to the 2011 title and Tom Ingram to the 2010 equivalent.
Robertson and Gamble both have just a single year of car racing experience to call on, but each has already tasted high levels of success. Robertson achieved three race wins during his debut campaign, and took two more in the end-of-year Winter Series. He also entered the record books with his debut victory at Croft in North Yorkshire as the youngest ever winner of an MSA regulated car race.
“This year I’m aiming for nothing less than the championship title, I’ve got a great relationship with the guys at HHC and we know we’ve got what it takes to win”, he said, “We know Ginetta Junior will be as tough as ever this year but, with a year’s experience under my belt, I’m well prepared and I’m confident we can fight for the title.”
Gamble too scorched to three race wins in his maiden car racing season last year, driving for the TJ Motorsport team, and also took one more on his way to winning the Winter Series crown. As the driver who ended Seb Morris’ undefeated streak during the third weekend of the 2011 season, Gamble – like Robertson – is rightly viewed as a true favourite for the Ginetta Junior title this year.
“I’m over the moon to be back in Ginetta Junior for a second season, especially off the back of winning the Winter Series”, said Gamble, “It’s great to be joining Hillspeed, the team’s record speaks for itself and we stand a really good chance of fighting for the championship.”
The 2012 championship will begin at Brands Hatch in Kent on 31 March/1 April.
